Six Under 23s named in Zim CHAN squad

Madinda has announced his final 23 man squad for the CHAN finals in Sudan

Zimbabwe national senior soccer team caretaker coach Madinda Ndlovu has named six Young Warriors players in his final 23 squad for the Championship of Nations finals to be played in Sudan from Febraury 4 to 24.

The Under 23 squad has proved to be a star-studded squad and a 3-2 away victory over Zambia in an All Africa Games qualifier is just evidence of the abundance of talent in the team, and inclusion of at least six of these players was subject of much speculation this week.

The Warriors coaches had no choice but to include all the Under 23 players who were in camp, except Brian Abbas Amidu of Black Mambas, who did not play in Zambia.

Enterprising striker Simba Sithole has found his way into the final 23 squad. The Under 23 hotshot scored two goals away in Zambia two weeks ago. Another highly rated younster Denver Mukamba now with Dynamos is part of the Chan squad.

Other Under 23 players who made the grade include a much revived Archieford Gutu, skipper and Gunners left back Qadr Amin, keeper Ariel Sibanda and talented midfielder Joel Ngodzo, both of Highlanders.

The team is not without experience though. Experienced defenders Daniel Veremu, Gilbert Mapemba, Nyasha Mukumbi and Guthrie Zhokinyu, striker Norman Maroto and midfielders Bhekimpilo Ncube and Charles Chiutsa are senior players in the team.

The only unfortunate development for the Warriors was the loss of experienced and pacy attacking midfielder Benjamin Marere who failed to recover from a knee injury on time.

Those who were unfortunate not to make the final 23 apart from Amidu are Hwange veteran keeper Timothy Sibanda, Lengthens defender Arnold Chivheya, Ziscosteel defender Munyaradzi Mungadzi, former Highlanders striker Francis Kanda, now at Dynamos, and Shooting Stars midfielder Tofireyi Sambo.

The Warriors are set to participate in a group that includes giants Ghana, neighbours South Africa and Niger. The Warriors finished the group stages without a loss during the inaugural finals, but could not go far after failing to register a single win.
