Zim players in Europe: Update

[Posted 24 Jan 2011]
[By BeezSports Reporter]
Benjani"s English club Blackburn Rovers beat West Brom 2-0 on Sunday to move to 7th on the log

Most Zimbabwean players in Europe celebrated the success of their clubs over the weekend, but a few went home with teary eyes and heavy hearts after disappointing results.

The following leagues have been surveyed for results; the Barclays English Premiership, French Ligue 2, Danish SAS-Ligaen, Belgian Jupiler League, Cypriot First Division, Austrian T-Mobile Bundesliga  and the Ukraine Premier League.

England Premiership and League One

Benjamin "Benjani" Mwaruwari's high-riding Blackburn Rovers moved to 7th place on the Barclays English Premier Soccer League table following an impressive 2-0 victory over West Brom on Sunday at Ewood Park. Benjani was part of the squad but was an unused substitute for the rest of the 90 minutes. The arrival of a one-time Ewood Park darling Roque Santa Cruz on loan from Manchester City, means that Benjani may not enjoy the starting place which saw him score memorable goals like his two goals against Liverpool in a 3-1 victory some few weeks back.

In Ligue One, Onismor Bhasera sat out the 0-2 loss that his club Plymouth Argyle suffered away at Charlton. Plymouth now lie in 15th place with 33 points out of 27 matches, the most games played by any Ligue One side this season. Bhasera scored in Plymouth's 3-1 victory over MK Dons last week.

French Ligue 2

Ovidy Karuru's US Bolougne suffered a 0-1 loss at home to Drancy in a Ligue 2 match on 22 January. Karuru's club is now 12th on the log after 20 games. The Warriors midfielder scored in Bolougne's 2-1 home victory over Angers on the 15th January. He is the club's second top goal scorer at only 2 goals out of 13 appearances. He trails the club's leading scorer, 30 year-old French striker Gregory Thil who has banged in 5 goals from 20 appearances thus far.

Belgian Jupiler League

All Zimbabwean players in Belgium's topflight league celebrated victories for their teams, despite their very limited contribution on the field of play, and interestingly with a an identical 3-0 scoreline. Only Vusa Nyoni featured for his club Germinal Beerschot in a 3-0 demolition of Waregem on Saturday, but the former Cercle Brugge star was only introduced in the 78th minute for Porokara R. Cephas Chimedza's new club Westerlo beat his former club St Truiden 3-0 on Saturday. The Warriors midfielder, who still needs to gain match fitness after many months on the sidelines, was not part of the Westerlo squad that played over the weekend. Honour Gombami, who is still out through injury, celebrated his team mates' men-like 3-0 victory over struggling Lierse.

Austrian  T-Mobile Bundesliga

The league has not yet resumed following the festive break, and action is set to return only in February. Warriors midfielder Justice Majabvi's club LASK Linz is still perked at the bottom of the 10 team log, and trails SV Mattersburg by only 2 points, but with a whopping negative goal difference of minus 33. The worst in the league. Mattersburg has the second worst at minus 20.

Ukraine Premier League

FC Metalurh Donetsk is home to normadic and temperamental Zimbabwean-born striker, the gangly Musawenkosi Mguni. The team lies 10th on the 16 team Ukraine Premier League after 19 league games. The last matches in this league were played at the end of November 2010. The league is currently on recess and action will only resume in March 2011. Despite having been used as a substitute in Donetsk's last two matches, Mguni is the club's top goal scorer with 4 goals from 12 appearances. By the time the league went on a break, Mguni was just returning from an injury. His last goal in 2010 came on 12 November in a 1-1 draw against Obolon in a league match.  Mguni is a proven goal scorer.

Danish SAS-Ligaen

Quincy Antipas has enjoyed more game time in Denmark this season than in the previous term. The Danish soccer season is on a break at the moment and action will only resume on March 6 this year. Antipas' Danish top flight club Sonderjyske is currently lying 7th on the 12 team league log after 19 games. Sonderjyske's last match before the break ended 1-1 against Randers.

Cyprus First Division

Despite newspaper reports to the effect that there are many Zimbabwean players plying their trade in Cyprus' topflight league, evidence gathered by BeezSports shows that there are only two players registered with two Cypriot First Division clubs. Champions Omonia Nicosia are home to former Highlanders versatile defender Noel Kaseke, and another former Highlanders player, striker Obadiah Tarumbwa is on the books of Enosis. Champions Omonia have 37 points from 18 games and are trailing log leaders APOEL who sit aloft with 44 points after the same number of games. Kaseke has only played 7 matches for Omonia. Tarumbwa has played 17 games for Enosis, scoring just a single goal. His club is sitting on a lowly 9th position on a 14 team league. Tarumbwa's advantage is that he can play either as a striker or as an attacking midfielder.

Romania Liga 1

Mike Temwanjira's FC Vaslui is performing very well in Liga 1 this current season. The club is currently placed 3rd on an 18 team league. Unfortunately Temwanjira has played just 1 game out of a possible 18 for his high-riding club. It is not clear if injury has anything to do with Mbozha's limited game time in Romania this season.
