Greece v Nigeria Match Preview

Key defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos was surprisingly on the bench in Greece's opening game and there was no revelation that he was injured. He is expected to return and shore up the defence which was badly exposed against South Korea. Another defender who was out injured Vangelis Moras has recovered and could feature in today's key match for Greece. The same is expected from striker Dimitrios Salpingidis who came on as substitute against South Korea.

Torosidis is just one booking away from suspension. He is sitting on a yellow card.

There was an injury scare when Taiwo was taken out against Argentina after injuring his toe, but the key left back has recovered and ready to take part in today's match. Coach Lars Lagerback could throw in experienced striker Obafemi Martins to partner Yakubu Aiyegbeni upfront. With Taiwo back from injury, there might not be need for left winger Osaze Odemwingie, but such is the indusrty of Odemwingie that it won't be surprising to see him in the starting eleven. This match is a must win for the Super Eagles.

Haruna is sitting on a yellow card and will have to be very careful today.

Greece have had a very poor World Cup record by their standards as former European champions. In their last World Cup appearance in 1994, they lost all their three matches, conceded 10 goals in the process and never scored a single goal. Not something to do their chances any good in today's match.

The Greek have not registered any win in 2010, they only last beat Ukraine in November last year during a World Cup play-off. And against South Korea, coach Ottoh Rehhagel's team managed just two shots on target. Greece is going through probably their toughest economic slump in years, and that could be affecting the players. It was expected that that could instead inspire them to do well at this year's world cup.

Nigeria have always enjoyed playing European opposition, and their victories at the World Cup came against European teams. At the USA '94 finals they beat Bulgaria 3-0 and Greece 2-0 on their way to the second round. In 1998 they defeated Spain 3-2 and Bulgaria 1-0.

Even though Nigeria played well in terms of ball possession, they only managed a single shot on target against Argentina last week. Nigeria interestingly finished the World Cup qualifiers unbeaten in their group.

The Super Eagles undoing always has been poor preparations. This World Cup was no dfferent in terms of preparation. They got a coach very late, never played enough meaningful friendly matches.
