Bafana squad to face Kenya named

[Posted 04 Feb 2011]

Pitso Mosimane has named a balanced squad which excludes two stars, Mphela and Teko Modise

South Africa's Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane on Thursday named a squad for the official friendly match against the Harambee Stars of Kenya, which saw some exclusions, recalls and limited new call-ups.

The major talking point of the squad named by Pitso is the bold exclusion of match unfit Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Teko Modise and Katlego Mphela.

In a sign of maturity for a national team coach, Mosimane emphasised that the main reason for not calling the two players into the Bafana squad was discipline.

Modise was suspended by former club Orlando Pirates for staying away from training without authority, before he was permitted to cross the floor to league rivals Sundowns.

Mphela has been in a self-imposed exile away from Chloorkorp to try and force the hand of his club with request to his demand to receive a guarantee that he will be allowed to join a club of his choice Partizan Belgrade at the end of the current season.

Mosimane, a known man of principle, took a principled stand not to antagonise the clubs by acting as if he disrespected their disciplinary codes.

"We had to take a stand and send a strong message that discipline at clubs should be maintained and brought to Bafana, hence some of the familiar faces are not in the squad," Mosimane revealed.

"We do not encourage behaviour where players miss training or matches for whatever reason.

"We cannot compromise the integrity of those clubs where those players are contracted by calling the very same players into the national team," the Bafana coach emphasised.

Israeli-based Tshepo Masilela, who is still recovring from a serious knee injury, has been left out of the squad.

Also missing from the named squad are defenders Siyanda Xulu, Bevan Fransman, Keegan Ritchie, and striker Sthembiso Ngcobo on grounds of either poor form or not having seen much action at their clubs in the past month.

Bidvest Wits' inform striker Sifiso Myeni  is the only new inclusion.

Recalled back to the fold are Msivukile Tom, in-form Pirates midfielder Tlou Segolela and defender Reuben Cloete,  andThulani Segolela of Ajax Cape Town.

There were also places for England-based Bongani Khumalo of Tottenham Hotspurs and Aaron Mokoena who missed the friendly match against the USA on 17 November due to injury.
