Zim striker breaks into Russian topflight!

Mguni, seen here in action for Donetsk, has joined Russian club Terek Grozny

Normadic prolific goal-getter Musa Mguni has finally broken into one of the top soccer leagues in Europe, the Russian Leagues, and has joined Terek Grozny in Russia's Premier League ahead of the beginning of the 2011 season.

Mguni joins Grozny from Metalurh Donetsk of Ukraine's Premier League.

The Grozny squad for the 2011 season lists the 27 year-old Mguni as one of the off-season acquisitions for the Russian topflight league club.

Grozny is a club that was formed in 1946 and comes from Grozny, the capital of Chechnya in southern Russia.

The club gained promotion into the topflight league in 2008, but has the distinction of winning a Russian Cup while competing in the lower division of Russian soccer, the only time that such a thing has happened in Russian football.

In 2011, Grozny will be coached by the Chelsea great and three time World Player of the Year winner Ruud Gullit. The former Netherlands captain recently signed an 18-month contract to coach the Russian outfit. Gullit has coached Chelsea before.

It is a sign of confidence in Mguni's abilities if a soccer legend like Gullit makes him one of his early signings for the Russian club. Mguni will be coached by one of the world's living soccer legends, and will compete in a very good league.

Russian topflight football is arguably one of the most competitive leagues in Europe at the moment. Russian teams have been doing very well in the UEFA Champions league and the UEFA Europa League.

In the past two seasons, former Russian champions Rubin Kazan became popular for defeating Barcelona. The Russian giants were however eliminated at the group stages this season, and could not make it into the last 16 in the Champions league.

In the Europa League, Russian clubs have proved to be particularly dominant over their European counterparts.

CSKA Moscow topped their Europa Group F, where they finished with 16 points, 7 points clear of the second-placed Sparta Prague, while their compatriots Zenit St Petersburg ended as Group G leaders with 18 points, exactly 11 points ahead of 2nd placed Anderlecht.

The dominance of Russian teams is a clear sign of how competitive the Russian league is considered in Europe.

Mguni will therefore be rubbing shoulders with players from Rubin Kazan, CSKA Moscow and Zenit St Petersburg. Without a doubt, Mguni will emerge a better player than the Cypriot, United Arab Emirates and Ukraine leagues made him out to be.

The Russian League is currently on off-season break, and league action will only begin in March.

Now, that is likely to cost Mguni a place in the Warriors' match against Mali. New coach Charles Mhlauri is not likely to give a non-active player a call-up despite the competitiveness of the league he has just joined.

It is nonetheless an advantage for the Warriors when potential players make good moves during the European transfer market season.

Many journalists have called for the inclusion of Mguni into the Warriors' squads for many years, but for one reason or the other, Mguni has been unfortunate not to get as many calls as his talent and ability otherwise deserve.
