Fifa have confirmed that Qatar inisist that they want to host the 2022 W.Cup in summer

It is official, the 2022 soccer World Cup in Qatar will be staged in summer, and not in Winter as most European commentators have been clamouring for, FIFA have now confirmed.

Before and after the announcement of Qatar as winners of the rights to host the global sporting spectacle in 2022, a debate has ensued regarding the efficacy and suitability of hosting games in summer given the high temperatures in the Gulf region.

Qatar had maintained that the games will be played in summer, and not during the January period, the winter time in the Gulf.

UEFA President, Michel Platini, a very vocal figure in world football, and yet another vocal figure, Franz Beckenbauer had led the European call to switch the finals to a more 'suitable' winter period in Asia.

Qatar won the rights to host the World Cup finals on the basis that they will use technology to cool off the stadiums during summer. And Fifa awarded them the rights ahead of other contenders.

True to their word, Fifa have maintained that it is Qatar, and them alone who have a right to decide when to stage the games during the year.

"Everything is settled now for summer and with all 64 matches in the territory of Qatar," Fifa president Sepp Blatter said in a BBC interview.

"In the bidding documents it was clearly established that the executive committee reserved the right to change anything in the bidding process, but here in this case it must come from Qatar.

"Qatar has not moved for the time being. I think for the time being this matter is on ice because we have just signed in the last days the final documents," Blatter added.

The world soccer governing boady also moved to allay fears that the hosting of the mathes would be spread to other neighbouring countries, by catergorically stating that only Qatar is the host.
