Sudan send brave Cranes home

Uganda have been booted out of CHAN following an unfortunate 0-1 loss to Sudan

Despite a spirited performance and a much improved display by Uganda's Cranes, the East Africans still found themselves unlucky and 0-1 down at the end of the day in Khartoum, as they suffered loss from a goal scored against the run of play by Sudan in a Group A  Championship of Nations match.

Striker Mudathir Eltaib scored in the 9th minute to give the Sudanese a 100% record in the group stages of the CHAN, following their victory over Gaban last week. With the lone goal came qualification, and the unlucky Cranes were sent packing from the tournament.

The Cranes' loss mean that their last match against Gabon will be a dead rubber, and Bobby Williamson's side will take an early plane home.

If the truth be told, Sudan were very lucky to escape with three points, as they were kept under siege by the Ugandans for much of the game, and they have goalkeeper Mohamed Eldin to thank for keeping them in the match.

The least that Uganda deserved from the match was a point, given their dominance of the hosts.

Uganda midfielder Steven Bengo gave the home team all problems with some sublime skills and a spirited performance, but his efforts in supplying passes to strikers did not pay off.

The Cranes had good chances to score, like in the 42nd minute when Luyima Judah’s strike was superbly saved by Mohamed.

Kaweesa Manco was to hold his head in disbelief in the 70th minute when he witnessed Mohamed heroically stop his shot from hitting the back of the net.

The final whistle was painful noise to the Cranes players as they could not stomach the reality that they were now out of the tournament and were headed home.

Meanwhile, in another Group A match, Algeria and Gabon drew 1-1.

Uganda now has zero points after two matches, Gabon has a single point, Algeria sits on second with 4 points, while Sudan lead Group A with 6 points, which ensured they became the first team to book their place in the quarter-finals of the competition.
