Warriors back in contention for CHAN quarter-finals

[Posted 09 Feb 2011]

Warriors of Zimbabwe beat Black Stars of Ghana 1-0 in a CHAN Group B match

The Warriors hauled themselves back into contention for a quarter-final berth at Championship of Nations finals group stages, following their men-like 1-0 victory over desperate Black Stars of Ghana in a match played at Wad Mehdani on Wednesday .

Zimbabwe collected three points to move to second position in Group B, courtesy of a 70th strike from young midfielder Archieford Gutu.

Reports from Sudan indicate that the match's free-flow was affected by the poor quality of the pitch, whose roughness made it  difficult for a free passing game, forcing players to simply pumb clearances forward.

Zimbabwe however, still had chances to wrap up the match in the first half, but Denver Mukamba reportedly failed to rise to the occasion on occasions when he had opportunities to put the Warriors ahead.

The Warriors' victory, coupled with South Africa's 2-0 victory over Niger, propelled the Zimbabweans into 2nd position, and they are still with a chance to qualify for the quarter-finals.

South Africa, with a 100% record, following the two goals from Myron Shongwe, now sit on top of the log, and look certain to qualify. They are not guaranteed a place in the next round of the competition as yet.

The permutations are that three teams from Group B are capable of finsihing group stages tied at 6 points, and may need to be seperated by goal difference to decide two teams which go through to the next round of the CHAN.

If Zimbabwe beat South Africa in their final match, they will complete the group stages with 6 points. Similarly, Niger could complete this stage with 6 points with a victory over Ghana, who are, mathematicaly speaking, not yet out of the competition.

If the above scenario is to be seen, then three teams will end with 6 points, and goal difference or head to head count will become critical.

There is another scenario which could be very interesting. South Africa could end the group stages with 100% and beat Zimbabwe, while Ghana register their first win against Niger to live all the other teams, except South Africa, with 3 points.

Again goal differences will have to be considered.

Therefore there is everything to play for in Group  B. Expect the final matches generate passion and interest.
