PSL to name league sponsor, announces new CEO

The Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League is expected to announce a new league sponsor, among other sponsors for various competitions on 25 February, just a few days before the new 2011 season kicks off.

Delta Beverages, with its known brand, the Castle Lager, will in all likelihood be unveiled as the new sponsors of a league which had its lowest ebb last season when the country's new champions Motor Action sadly walked away with just an empty trophy.

The outstanding footballer of the season, the first runner up, second runner up, keeper of the year and the 11 best players of the season were lucky to receive some token of appreciation from individual sponsors.

All this is bound to change in 2011 when the new PSL Board of Governors unveil new sponsorships for the season towards end of February.

Apart from Delta's main sponsorship, the PSL has also retained investment bank BancABC as sponsors of the country’s premier knock-out cup competition at the moment, the BancABC Super Eight, the only cup competition that has been in existence in the last three years.

The PSL is also expected to announce a new sponsor for a 16-team knockout tournament, and any other cup competition such as the Season Opening Charity Shield.

The ideal situation is to have one 16-team knockout cup, another cup which involves lower division teams and adds to the excitement of topflight football in the country.

The 16 PSL teams will also be hoping that the new sponsor will have the following packages to cushion teams against expenses, an advance amount to enable clubs to meet the general operational costs of running PSL teams, and financial support for teams taking part in CAF club competitions.

Meawhile, PSL Board of Governors Chairperson Twine Phiri has announced Kennedy Ndebele as the new substantive Chief Executive Officer of the PSL.

The PSL recently held interviews for the position of the substantive CEO. Ndebele has been acting PSL CEO for a good number of months now since last year.

"We are a professional organisation and what we did was to write to the seven individuals interviewed to let them know of our decision. I can now confirm that Kennedy Ndebele is the new PSL chief executive officer after that process,” Phiri announced last Friday.

The selection interviews were conducted by the PSL board members, Phiri, Deputy Chaiperson Joseph Zulu of Hwange, Cuthbert Chitima of Gunners, responsible for development and Dynamos' Harrisson Mbewe, the PSL Treasurer.
