Sponsors trickling back to Zim PSL

NetOne will sponsor the Charity Shield in Zim"s PSL in 2010,sign of good times returning to PSL

The sun appears to be shining again for the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League, who, after enduring a lean spell between 2009 and 2010, a period in which all the 16 teams competed in an unbranded league, sponsors have started to return to local football.

Just a week after new PSL sponsors Delta Beverages announced their reunion with soccer in a US$600 000 sponsorship package through their Castle Lager brand, two other sponsors have announced sponsorship deals meant to cushion Zimbabwe's CAF Champions League represntatives, Motor Action FC and Dynamos FC.

Last Friday, giant mobile phone network operator NetOne unveiled a package for the Season Opener, the Charity Shiled Trophy to be contested by 2010 PSL champions Motor Action and BancABC Super Eight winners Dynamos at Rufaro Stadium on 13 March.

The value of the Charity Shield is reported to be US$200 000. The winners are expected to pocket $40 000, while the runners-up take home $20 000, while the rest presumably will be consumed by costs of hosting and donations to charity.

In another development, Dynamos and Highlanders locked horns on Sunday at Rufaro Stadium in a semi-final of yet another cup competition, the Venture for Victory Challenge Cup, an invitational competition.

Dynamos, who choked a 1-0 victory against their perennial arch-rivals in Zimbabwean soccer, are set to now contest the final against automatic qualifiers, guests from South Africa's ABSA Premiership, Kaizer Chiefs on 27 March at the National Sports Stadium.

Winners of the finals are guaranteed $20 000, with losing finalists pocketing $10 000. Third placed team Highlanders will receive $5 000 for their sweat and efforts.

BancABC Super Eight is another competition which a select few of Zimbabwe's PSL teams will have to look forward to this season. The top eight teams from last season will battle it out for the main prize of this cup.

There are also reports that Delta Beverages announced sponsorship of the Castle Cup to be contested by all the 16 teams some time this year. Such reports are yet to be confirmed by the sponsors. Beezsports will follow up on this story.

The coming in of sponsors will certainly help cheer up the spirits of many PSL players who battled for the entire season last year without much reward for their efforts.

It was such a shame that a league, ranked as the 12th best on the continent, with a team in the mini-league phase of the CAF Champions league for the past 5 years, had an unbranded league for almost two seasons.
