Billiat stars in Ajax's routing of Pirates

Billiat"s double an Maluleke"s single helped Ajax to the top of the ABSA PSL log

Khama Billiat produced a near flawless performance when Ajax Cape Town hosted Orlando Pirates at the Newlands Stadium on Wednesday  night, grabbing two goals as the Urban Warriors ran away 3-0 winners in a crucial league match dubbed "title decider".

The hosts dominated their visitors from the first whistle until the referee blew to end proceedings in Cape Town, and Ajax played like true masters of the game, while the Buccaneers were reduced to students in a soccer lecture hall called Newlands.

While the entire team acquitted itself brilliantly before home fans, two Urban Warriors' magicians combined to torture Bucs on a night that Ruud Krol's boys would love to forget very fast.

Names like Billiat and Thulani Serero sent shivers down the spines of the Bucs defenders before the match, and the two youngsters just proved on a beautiful Cape Town night that they have not received rave review in the media for nothing.

Billiat slammed home a beauty as early as the 25th minute following a flowing team movement, and the attacking midfielder was at the end of such a brilliant move by the Urban Warriors.

The former Aces Academy of Zimbabwe prodigy returned to haunt the SOWETO giants in the 54th minute, when he connected a great pass from who else, but his partner in the crime of destroying the sea robbers, Serero. It was Ajax 2, Pirates 0 at that stage.

Enterprising George Maluleke put the issue beyond Pirates' reach when he produced an individual effort which resulted in a well-taken 20-metre drive which gave Senzo Meyiwa no chance in goals for Pirates, to give Ajax an unassailable 3-0 lead in the 56th minute.

Pirates attempted to get back into the game towards the end, but Ajax were resolute both in midfield and defence, and they held onto their healthy lead to shoot to the top of the PSL standings.

Whether the match and Ajax's crucial win will prove to be the turning point of the league campaign, will, it appears, only be determined at the end of this closely fought ABSA Premier Soccer League title race.

At least four teams still stand a chance to win the coveted PSL title during  this current 2010/2011 season. Both Ajax and Pirates, who are seperated only by two points, sitting at 52 and 50 points respectively, remain strong contenders. Chiefs and Sundowns are the two other PSL teams with potential win the title.

Mamelodi Sundowns are clearly a team on form under caretaker coach Ian Gorowa. For a team that once dropped to 6th place early this year, to now sit at 3rd place after Wednesday matches, is a remarkable sign of the return of great times at the Brazillians.

Nyasha Mushekwi's 10th goal of the season proved to be a match winner against Vasco da Gama at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night.

But the night belonged to the new log leaders Ajax. The team has given the Western Cape reason to believe that the league title could now return to the Mother City many years after Santos brought smiles on Capetonians' faces.

Other results of the PSL matches played tonight.

Maritzburg 1-0 Platinum Stars
