Motor Action miss golden chance, eliminated by ASEC

[Posted 19 Mar 2011]
[By Brighton Mupangavanhu]
There was no celebration at Rufaro as Motor Action were knocked out of CL by ASEC after a shoot-out

One of Zimbabwe's two representatives in the Champions League Motor Action wasted a golden opportunity to qualify for the next stage of Africa's premier club competition when they failed to score a goal in 90 minutes, and then fell 2-4 to visiting ASEC Mimosas on penalties.

The Confederation of African Football had ruled that in keeping with its football regulations, ASEC forfeited the opportunity to play a second leg in Cote d'Ivoire owing to the political instability and an atmosphere of violence prevailing in the former French colony.

The match at Rufaro Stadium in Harare was therefore turned into a decider and has determined that ASEC progresses to the next round.

Having scored only 2 goals against ASEC's 4 during the penalty lottery, the Mighty Bulls are now out of the Orange CAF Champions League and will have to try again in 2012 if they manage to finish among the top two in the Castle Premier Soccer League in 2011.

Meanwhile, Dynamos will entertain ASM Algiers at Rufaro tomorrow in the second round of the same competition. DeMbare will be hoping for a positive result ahead of the return leg in Algiers within a fortnight.

Zimbabwe's 2010 league runners up are currently bubbling with confidence after posting encouraging results in preparatory matches against their arch-rivals in the league, CAPS United and Highlanders.

The Algerians have made no secret of their desire to burst DeMbare's bubble on a Sunday afternoon tomorrow.

Upon their arrival in the capital this week, the visiting Algerian champions declared total war against Zimbabwe's most decorated club in the history of the PSL and in terms of participation in the Champions league.

Dynamos' fans will no doubt seek to create a very intimidating atmosphere at the former champions' favourite hunting ground, and tomorrow's match is likely to be an explosive affair.
