Cranes defeat Bissau away from home

Uganda Cranes ended an eleven year old away winning drought after defeating Guinea Bissau 1-0 in the African Cup on Nations qualifier group J encounter at Estadio 24 in Guinea capital Bissau yesterday

Dennis Obua quenched the Cranes thirst in the 22nd minute after successfully netting a ball from the Cranes speed merchant striker Geoffrey Massa.

The Hearts striker has netted twice in three 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifiers campaign after netting against Angola in 3-0 victory at Namboole National stadium in Kampala last year in September.

The Cranes goal keeper Dennis Onyango deserved to be man of the match after saving a 70th minute penalty, an act that preserved  the Cranes' away win and the vital 3 points.

The Cranes skipper narrowly missed getting a red card in the 69th minute after a rough tackle and excessive force imposed to the Bissau striker Gogihno, an incident which called for a penalty.

The Bissau team dominated the match, but their finishing let them down, and they also found Onyango a stumbling block after the final third.

The Federation of Uganda football Association president Lawrence Mulindwa appealed to the Ugandan government to intervene in the cranes issues early to avoid inconveniences such as threats of failing to fulfill a tie due to lack of funds.

"We are happy; we made it as expected because we were well set, we are also looking forward to winning at home too and qualify," Mulindwa said.

"However, the government should always intervene early when we call for help," added the excited president.

Uganda last won outside the country in 2001 against Malawi in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers and had spent 10 years without an away victory.

The Cranes are leading group J with 7 points in 3 matches and are yet to concede any goal
