CAPS fire title warning shots

CAPS fire title warning shots

While conceding five goals in only two matches should worry any coach by any standards, but not with Moses Chunga, whose side CAPS United scored five goals past only a second team in their second Castle Premier Soccer League match played at Rufaro in Harare on Sunday. Last CAPS also fired five past Zimbabwe Saints.

Makepekepe dispatched Shooting Stars 5-2 on a Sunday afternoon, to shoot to the top of the PSL with 6 points out of two matches, with 10 goals scored and 5 conceded in just two matches to maintain a 100% record in the PSL thus far.

Simba Sithole, Evans Gwekwerere and David Rediyoni gave CAPS the lead, before Pride Tafirenyika added a brace to give the Green Machine a convincing victory over a club with whom they fought ugly battles for the rights to use the name CAPS a few seasons ago.

Shooting Stars is owned by the Pharmaceutical company that used to own CAPS United until the PSL franchise was sold to Twine Phiri.

Silas Chihota and Sam Gahadzikwa scored Stars' consolation in the 71st and 82nd minutes respectively.

While critics will point at Chunga's leaky defence as a cause for concern if CAPS are to be serious title contenders, Bambo himself is not pertubed at all.

ďThis is a good result for us but itís still early days and we could have done better in this match.

"As for the defence, Iím not worried at all because as long as our goal difference is in the positive Iíll be satisfied,Ē said the former Warriors captain.

The truth of the matter however is that any team which entertains any hopes of winning the PSL title this year, should strive for balance in the team.

CAPS' victories have come against light weights in the league (Saints and Stars), and matches against the likes of defending champions Motor Action,Hihglenders, Gunners, Monomotapa and Dynamos are yet to come. Bambo is better advised to shore up his defence for the tougher battles ahead.

Two games into the league, nonetheless, CAPS are proving to be the team to beat. Since they have tasted the leadership of the league with new sponsors, Delta Beverages with their key brand, the Castle Lager, it may prove hard to dislodge Kepekepe bhora from the top of the summit.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe Saints collected their first set of full points after beating giant slayers Kiglon 1-0 in Bulawayo on Sunday.
