Club v Country row: Young Warriors win the 1st part

In-from Archie Gutu is expected to play a key role in Zim"s clash with Botswana"s U"23 this Friday

The Under 23 national soccer team's preparations for the All-Africa Games first round qualifier against Botswana in Gaborone on Friday were almost thrown into turmoil yesterday over the availability of four key Dynamos players after the club indicated its willingness to hold onto the players.

The Young Warriors squad, currently in camp for the crucial fixture against  Zimbabwe's Western neighbours has the Dynamos quartet of Devon Chafa, Archieford Gutu, Timire Mamvura and Denver Mukamba.

Dynamos, who have an outstanding fixture against FC Platinum this afternoon, desperately needed their four players to feature for them in this crucial match. DeMbare are yet to pick up any point after two matches, and have to revive their title ambitions by getting a result today.

What complicated matters for the Young Warriors is that the All-Africa Games qualifers do not fall on a FIFA date, and as such Dynamos had every right to refuse to release their players if doing so would affect matters of bread and butter.

It is is a fact that every team's highest priority should be league fixtures. It is such fixtures which determine whether a team wins any cups and titles. More importantly, the only way to preserve a team's Premier Soccer League's status is to do well in league matches.

It is for the reasons outlined above that the Young Wariors' management had to negotiate with Dynamos chairman Farai Munetsi to try and persuade the Glamour Boys to release their players for Friday's crucial qualifier.

“Dynamos want their players for the league match tomorrow (today) and we also need them for national duty on Friday. As of now, I do not know if the players will go to Botswana as I am discussing with the Dynamos chairman,” said Under 23 Manager Wellington Mpandare.

The good news for the Young Warriors is that in the end, Dynamos appear to have bowed down to the pressurre of nationalistic sentiments because their four players were scheduled to leave Harare this morning with the rest of the squad on a 12 hour trip to Gabarone .

Meanwhile, Friday Phiri and his technical team have made forced changes to the squad, dropping three players from the rest of the squad for various reasons.

Dynamos striker Rodrick Mutuma was dropped earlier this week from camp after revelations that he is an over-age player, after turning 23 sometime this year. Kiglon striker Patrick Kaunda has been called in to replace him.

Chicken Inn keeper Liberty Chirava failed to turp up for camp under unclear circumstances, and he has been  replaced by Motor Action's Francis Nicho.

South Africa-based striker Matthew Rusike picked up a groin injury during training, and the Jomo Cosmos man has been replaced by Kiglon striker  William Manondo, scorer of that famous goal at Rufaro Stadium in early March which saw Dynamos losing 0-1 to Kiglon.

The Young Zebras have had good preparations despite the pain of elimination from the Olympic qualifers despite their brave 2-1 victory of Egypt's Young Pharoahs last week.

If anything, Botswana Under 23 team will be eager to salvage something this year by beating the Young Warriors of Zimbabwe and qualify for the Maputo 2011 Games.
