URA moves closer to tittle

URA edged closer to their fourth Ecobank Super League title with a resounding 3-1 victory over Express at Lugazi grounds yesterday. The win extends their lead over second-placed KCC by eight points to 44, though the latter have two games in hand.

Express looked to threaten the home side’s six-match unbeaten run at Lugazi when Willy Kavuma silenced a sizeable crowd with an 18th minute effort. But Steven Bengo levelled from the spot on 29 minutes after Express’ Imam Kinene’s back pass forced his goalkeeper Brian Bwete to fell striker Hamis Kizza in the area.

Defender Simeon Masaba then glanced in a header from Bengo’s corner on 37 minutes to go into recess with a 2-1 lead.

Express started the second half strongly and forced URA goalkeeper Ivan Mutumba, a student at Budo Secondary School, into a string of saves. Moses Ndawula also hit the crossbar as Express probed the URA goal defence.

Yet it was Bengo who completed his brace for URA on 64 minutes when he turned Kinene inside out and beat Bwete in goal.

URA coach Alex Isabirye, whose side still have to face challengers KCC and Victors, admits there is still a tough job to do but maintained that they will try to take care of their business first.

"We now just have to win our remaining games and the rest will cancel each other out," Isabirye said.

Masaba is counting on experience to see through the three-time league champions, who are left with six games to secure their fourth title.

"Experience will see us through," said the scorer of the second goal.

"Even when we went one nil down, I knew we just had to be patient and wait for our chances," Masaba added.
