Zim U'23 coach in playmaker search

National Under 23 coach Friday Phiri has been making frantic efforts through out this week in search of suitable replacements for the suspended potential match-winners Denver Mukamba and Archiford Gutu for the All Africa games return match against Botswana in Harare on Sunday.

The two Dynamos stars will not take a part in today's match after receiving red-cards in 2-2 draw away in Gaborone against the Young Zebras two weeks ago.

Coach Phiri is short of replacement quality in midfield, and the doubts over the availability of South Africa-based Matthew Rusike has thrown a further damper on the preparations for the crucial fixture.

Rusike is needed by his club Jomo Cosmos who are keen to secure qualification into the final match for promotion to the Premier Soccer League from the Inland stream of the South African First Division league.

Cosmos are reluctant to release their player for a non-FIFA  day match, and they will be within their rights should they decide to stick to their guns. The All Africa games qualifiers are not FIFA-recognised matches and clubs are not obliged to release their players.

Good news for Zimbabwe though is that star striker Simba Sithole of CAPS United is available and is in irresistible form, ahving scored 5 goals so far in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League.

There is also hope that England-based attacking midfielder Trevor Mutero could translate his amazing form from the Under 19 Metropolitan tournament in Cape Town recently into the Under 23 and help Zimbabwe complete a good job they started in Gaborone.

The Reading midfielder reportedly scored 6 goals in the Under 19 tournament and is expected to cover part of the void left by the suspended duo of Mukamba and Gutu.

Some good news for coach Phiri is the return to action of trusted defender Knowledge Machona who was suspended for the first leg in Gaborone. His absence was felt as Zimbabwe needlessly conceded two goals away.
