Zim U'23 needs better than Mickey Mouse preps vs Amaglu-glug

[Posted 02 May 2011]
[By Brighton Mupangavanhu]
Time has come for Friday Phiri to call upon the services of the likes of Musona and Billiat

Following their superb performance on Sunday where they walloped Botswana 4-1 in the 2nd leg of the All Africa games qualifier, Zimbabwe have set themselves a battle against tougher opponents, South Africa's Amaglu-glug.

Now, the Zimbabwe Football Association needs to be reminded that their Mickey Mouse kind of preparing the Under 23 team will not work against Amaglug-glug.

Against Botswana the team failed to hold a camp as proposed by coach Friday Phiri and his technical team, and the result was there for all to see. The team struggled to beat the young Zebras, and had to come from behind to settle for a 2-2 draw.

A team brimming with abundant talent like Zimbabwe Under 23 squad should not struggle against the likes of Botswana, despite the change in fortunes of their senior national team.

In the second leg, Zimbabwe apparently had about three days to train, if the media reports are anyting to go by.

To date the Zimbabweans have relied more on the talent of the U'23 boys and the astuteness of the technical team led by Phiri. Yet, it must be remembered, talent alone will not get a team past every opponent, especially better prepared opponent like SA.

The South Africans have been preparing for various competitions seriously. To date, they have played numerous friendly matches with several opposition.

The team has camped at home in Johannesburg this year and headed to Europe for several practise matches in preparation for the Olympics Qualifiers, and they have already beaten Benin and Libya in the competition.

The team played the Mauritania national team in March, beating them by a 2-0 margin.

Amaglu-glug boast in their ranks talented youngsters such as possible 2010/2011 season's Footballer of the Year Thulani Serero of Ajax Cape Town, who is set to move to Ajax Amsterdam next season.

They also have other stars like Andile Jali of ABSA premiership title chasers Orlando Pirates, and another star from yet another title-chasing club, Mamelodi Sundowns' Siyanda Xulu who recently trained with Barcelona and Arsenal.

Without a doubt, ZIFA must arrange a better camp and better practise matches for the team ahead of the clash against the South Africans.

It becomes imperative to recall the South Africa-based duo of Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiart, and France-based Ovidy Karuru, if qualification for the All Africa games mean anything to the country.

A  Zimbabwe team that has stars like Archieford Gutu, Denver Mukamba, Knowledge Musona, Knowledge Machona, Lincoln Zvasiya, Matthew Rusike, Ovidy Karuru, Simba Sithole, Qadr Amin and Khama Billiat should be good enough to beat Amaglu-glug on any given day, provided the team is prepared well.

The Under 23 team is a generation of young footballers that has ignited hopes and has filled the country with the nostalgia of the Dream Team days under the late Reinhardt Fabisch.

There is genuine talent in the team, and all that ZIFA needs to do, is to equipp the young boys with the necessary tools to do the job perfectly on the filed of play. All the boys want are good preparations, including decent accommodation and catering when they camp.

There are alternatives for ZIFA, the team can camp in Zimbabwe and play severalpractise matches with Premier Soccer League teams, or even invite Zambia for friendly matches.

Failure is not an option with this group of talented youngsters. Soccer leaders ought to be creative and ensure that the team is better prepared come the fixtures against Amaglu-glug.
