Sundowns feast on weakened Chiefs

Mwanjale put up a solid performance in the heart of the Sundowns defence

The battle for two of the title chasing ABSA Premier Soccer League teams needed the team that showed more hunger to prevail, and exactly that became the difference as Mamelodi Sundowns beat Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 to rise to 3rd on the log.

Kaizer Chiefs surprised all and sundry when they fielded a team without key players Siphiwe Tshabalala, Valery Nahayo, Knowledge Musona  and Abia Nale. The result is that they went into such a crucial match with a makeshift central defender Lucky Baloyi.

Apparently Musona and Shabba did not train with the team last week due to injuries.

Despite putting Sundowns on the back foot in the first half, Amakhosi soon fizzled out and suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of the Tshwane outift.

Sundowns punished Chiefs for missing gilt-edged chances in the first half and hit at them when Nyasha Mushekwi received a back pass from an under pressure Katlego Mphela, and the Zimbabwean expertly side footed past Itumeleng Khune with his weaker left foot.

The second half saw the match starting as a ding-dong affair, and the Downs central defence pairing of Method Mwanjale and Eduardo Ferreira did well to shut out the threat posed by substitutes Tshabala and Musona in the second half.

By the time Vladimir Vermozovic introduced Shabba and Musona, it was a little too late, as Downs had already increased their tally to 2-0 in the 52nd minute through Elias Pelembe.

Sundowns now have 54 points following their victory on Sunday, and with a game in hand against Amazulu coming midweek, they could end the week on 60 points if they collect maximum points on Wednesday and on Saturday.

Sundowns suddenly appear to be Ajax Cape Town's major threat for the league title now, given Orlando Pirates' shock 0-1 loss to Supersport United over the weekend.
