Selected European Leagues round-up: Man U closer tot title

ENGLAND

Manchester United moved within a point away from clinching the Barclays English Premier Soccer League title following their impressive 2-1 victory over closest rivals Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday late afternoon.

The damage at Old Trafford was done within the first 23 minutes in which United raced to a well-deserved 2-0 lead. Park Ji-Sung brilliantly set-up Javier Hernandez to score within 37 seconds, before Ryan Giggs created the 2nd goal which captain Nemanja Vidic headed in in the 23rd minute.

Chelsea needed to win this match to be level with Man U and lead by virtue of a superior goal difference, but at the end of the match, they found themselves trailing the Red Devils by six points, with just two games remaining.

HOLLAND

FC Twente moved closer to clinching a league and cup double after after defeating bitter rivals Ajax Amsterdam 3-2 in a Dutch Cup following extra time.

Twente and Ajax are currently neck to neck in the league with the former enjoying a very slender one point advantage, and the two teams meet in a title-deciding last game of the season next weekend. That match will certainly be another cup final for the two teams.

A draw will see FC Twente retain the title they won last season.

GERMANY

Borussia Dortmund were confirmed as the Bundesliga Champions more than a week ago with two matches to go, and the race is currently on for second best in the Bundesliga. Former champions Bayern Munich are locked in a tussle for 2nd spot with Bayer Leverkusen, and the final league matches next Saturday could be the deciding matches.

SCOTLAND

The gap between leaders Rangers and closest rivals was slashed to one point on Sunday, following Celtic's 2-0 victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday. Twenty four hours earlier Rangers had beaten Hearts 4-0 to open a four-point lead. With two games to go before the end of the Scottish Premier League, this is proving to be an interesting two horse race which will go to the wire.

ITALY

AC Milan recliamed the Scudetto, Serie A title they last won in 2004, following a 0-0 draw against AS Roma, while Inter Milan's 3-1 romp at Fiorentino provd to be only of academic value as they will now not be able to catch up with their bitter Milan rivals.

Inter Milan have to get used to a completing a season without the scudetto, which they had successfully defended and held for the past five years.

SPAIN

Real Madrid denied Barcelona the chance to wrap up the La Liga title this weekend with a sensational 6-2 crushing of Sevilla on Sunday.

Twenty four hours earlier, Barca had made light work of neighbours Espanyol, beating them 2-0 at Camp Nou to climb to 91 points, with three matches remaining. The Catalan club has the chance to wrap up the title against Levante on Wednesday and need a single point to achieve that. They could however win the title without needing a point if Real loseagainst Getafe on Tuesday.
