Warriors rise, but face 2014 W/Cup preliminaries

Despite their latest slight FIFA ranking improvement , the Zimbabwe national soccer team will have to go through 2014 World Cup qualifying preliminary rounds in November.

According to the latest rankings released this week by Fifa, Zimbabwe have jumped a mere three places on the world rankings from 129th position to being ranked 126th, and are only ranked 35the best in Africa.

The Confederation African Football met on Monday to announce that 24 teams ranked the lowest in Africa will have to compete and eliminate each other in the stage of the World Cup qualifiers, to begin in November this year.

Zimbabwe is among the 24 lowest ranked nations who will go into the hat, and will be joined at the preliminary stage by Central African Republic, DR Congo, Sierra Leone, Congo, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Guinea-Bissau, Madagascar, Namibia, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, Burundi, Swaziland, Liberia, Lesotho, Mauritania, Eritrea, Somalia, Comoros, Mauritius, Djibouti and Seychelles.

Only 12 teams are required to join the 28 other teams who have already received a bye into the qualifying stages proper. From the pool that the Warriors find themselves in, the competing nations will battle it out in a two legged preliminary on 11 and 15 November.

Those teams who survive the elimination will join a group of 40 nations in total who will be split into 10 groups of four nations each, who will compete on a round robin basis.

Winners of the 10 groups will have to face a once-off elimination and will be paired against another team  to determine Africa's permitted 5 representatives who will qualify for the World Cup finals in 2014.

This should spur the Zimbabwe Football Association to begin serious thinking around matters of preparations for the team.
