Nyandoro,Katsande,Sithole in Warriors squad

"Captain, My Captain", Esrom Nyandoro is back in the Warriors" Squad

Veteran Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Esrom Nyandoro led a good number of returnees to the Warriors squad to face Mali next month named by coach Norman Mapeza on Wednesday, while Under 23 striker Simba Sithole is a leading name among new comers.

Nyandoro has been called back into the squad, after having been omitted for the away tie in Mali for reasons that caused an uproar in parts of the country, that is, insinuations by Mapeza that the player was old and that the coach needed t give younger players a chance in the Warriors.

Also returning after missing the Bamako trip is France-based midfielder Ovidy Karuru of US Bolougne in the French Ligue 2. Willard Katsande of championship chasing Ajax Cape Town of South Africa makes a return after a long absence from the team.

If there is a player that Mapeza needs to create realistic scoring opportunities for the strikers, then it has to be Katsande. In the few matches he has started for Ajax, the former Gunners star has demonstrated that he is a creative midfielder, with kneck for scoring crucial goals.

Injuries have restricted Katsande's contribution to the title chase by the Urban Warriors of Cape Town.

There is place in the squad for rising striking star, Simba Sithole of CAPS United, who was on trial at Maritzburg United in KwaZulu Natal. The player of Sithole's talent deserves to be playing for the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns.

Cyprus-based Noel Kaseke, and Costa Nhamoinesu als return to the Warriors squad for the Mali tie. They both missed the trip to the West African country through injuries at their sustained at their respective clubs.

It remains unclear why Russia-based Musawenkosi Mguni has been omitted from a squad, given his profile, his current form, his height and his ability to score goals, which is what the Warriors seem to be lacking at this stage.

There is no doubt that Musona, Mushekwi and Sadomba are great players, but Musona is often wrongly used as a striker. He is best coming from deep or from the wing and creating opportunities for strikers.

Sadomba can best be utilised as a right-sided attacking midfielder. Only Mushekwi is the out-right striker in the squad, and ofcourse the young Sithole.

A potent squad that can get the Warriors goals requires something akin to a 4-3-3 formation when goals are badly needed. In this formation, Musona would become an additional striker, with Mushekwi and Mguni forming a deadly two-pronged two-some.

Zimbabwe is due to meet Mali in a Group A 2012 Orange African Nations Cup qualifying match at the National Sports Stadium on June 5 this year, and need nothing short of an out-right victory to bring themselves back into contention for qualifying for the finals to be co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon.

The Warriors are 3rd on the Group A log, after drawing twice (1-1 draw away in Liberia and 0-0 draw against Cape Verde at home) and losing once to Mali on March 26. With only two points out of a possible nine points, the Warriors have to win against Mali.

The inclusion of Nyandoro, Sithole, Katsande is a clear indication of the magnitude of this match for the Zimbabweans.

ZIFA needs to give the team opportunities to gel together, given the fact that a total of 10 players who did not travel to Bamako are in the squad. At least a friendly match should be arranged before this encounter againsts Mali.
