Jomo Cosmos return to SA topflight

Jomo Cosmos,  a Johannesburg-based club that has played in the local topflight division of South Africa for many years before, bounced back into the Premier Soccer League after beating Bay United in a sudden penalty shoot-out in the First Division Shiled final at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Sunday.

Bay United and Cosmos had topped the Coastal and Inland streams respectively to qualify for the Shield final which normally determines a team that automatically qualifies into the PSL.

The final was played over two legs, with the two teams drawing 0-0 at the Nelson Mandela University Stadium in two weeks back, before another barren draw led to the penalty lottery.

In the lottery, the home team Cosmos scored 4 times and missed once in the first five allocated kicks. Bay United did the same, and the two teams had to be seperated by a sudden death penalty.

Cosmos scored their suden death kick, and Bay agonisingly missed their effort, and are left to fight it off in the PSL Play-off finals, where they will meet the 15th placed PSL team and runners up from the coastal and inland streams of the First Division.

The runners up from the First division streams include Thanda Royal Zulu, Vasco da Gama and as it stands, Black Leopards who won an appeal against an earlier 3-point deduction by the PSL's Disciplinary Committee which saw Pretoria's Tuks qualifying ahead of them.

Unless Batau FC who lodged the matter with the PSL's DC, take the matter on appeal, the NFD play-offs will proceed as planned on 25 and 29 May.

Thanda Royal Zulu will face Bay United in the first leg of the first semi-final, while Leopards will take on Vasco da Gama in the other semi-final on 25 May, with the 2nd leg following on 29 May.

Winners of the semi-final will clash in the final to determine the team that joins Cosmos back into the PSL, given the fat that all the semi-finalists have tasted PSL action before.
