Mamelodi Sundowns interested in Onyango's signature

Mamelodi Sundowns interested in Onyango

Uganda Cranes goal keeper Dennis Onyango could seal a three-year lucrative deal with South Africa giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Cranes custodian has long been touted as a prospective replacement for the club’s retiring goalkeeper Brian Baloyi.

"Everything is almost done with only a few things left to tie up. It could be a done deal before the end of the day (Tuesday)," Onyango said

Onyango, who joined relegated Mpumulanga Black Aces a year ago after helping Super Sport to three consecutive South Africa Premier League titles, had previously been linked to Maritzburg and Kaizer Chiefs.

Chiefs however seem to have cooled their interest after Onyango insisted that he would not be interested in playing second fiddle to South Africa’s number one Itumelang Khune.

The revelation made Sundown’s position on Onyango even stronger.

The Pretoria-based club is among several clubs that have long appreciated Onyango’s brilliant reflexes, fearless attitude and abilities of speeding up play with quick goal kicks.

Cranes coach Bobby Williamson is surely one man that will hope a deal is sealed before Onyango returns to the country for next weekend’s must-win 2012 Nations Cup qualifier against Guinea Bissau.

Against the West Africans, Williamson will need a group of players with settled minds –more so in the absence of suspended team captain Ibrahim Sekagya.

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Massa struck twice as Itesalat overcame Tensana 3-2 in the Egyptian First Division on Sunday.

The Cranes forward arrives in the country on Sunday.

The team starts a local camp on May 30 ahead of the resumption of the 2012 AFCON qualifiers during the second weekend of June.
