Mushekwi, Rookie of the year for the 2010/2011 season? There is little doubt

Mamelodi Sundowns' Nyasha Mushekwi has emerged as a strong candidate to win Rookie of the Year award in the ABSA Premier Soccer League whose season ended at the end of last month.

The former CAPS United striker scored crcucial goals for Sundowns as they mounted a late challenge for the PSL title, a challenge which was damaged by a slumb in form in the last three matches, in which they collected only a single point in KZN out of a possible six.

Downs travelled to KZN in two of their last three matches, were shocked 3-1 by Maritzburg United and were held to a painful 1-1 draw by Amazulu. Should the Patrice Motsepe outfit collected the five points they lost, they could certainly have won the championship.

With a championship in their bag, the contributions of their individual players such as Mushekwi could have come to the fore, and Nyasha could possibly have finished as a top goal scorer, were it not for the drop in form for the entire team.

Mushekwi will however have to fight it out with compatriot Khama Billiat of Ajax Cape Town, who was was of the most outstanding players of the 2010/2011 season. Billiat scored about 9 goals for Ajax, from his position as a midfielder.

Other players such s Bongani Ndulula of Orlando Pirates also made the nation to sit and notice, as he scored crucial goals for Amagluglug in their current campaigns to qualify for 2012 London Olympics and the Maputo All Africa Games in September.

Mushekwi however stands head and shoulders above the rest, given his goal scoring record for Sundowns.   He scored 14 goals and was just a goal shy of eventual top goal scorer in the league, Kowledge Musona.
