Sudan beat Harambee Stars in friendly

A determined Sudan side edged out Kenya 2-1 in the LG Cup played on a slippery pitch at a near-full Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.

The heavens opened five minutes before kick off but this did not dampen the keen contest played at a brisk pace.

Mohammed Mouza opened the scoring for Sudan in the fourth minute with a simple header before Dennis Oliech equalized with header five minutes later.

Bakri Abdi Elkhadir gave Sudan the decisive lead with a powerful finish in the 26th minute to condemn Kenya to yet another home loss.

Both teams were using the friendly to prepare for September’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The match will have left Kenya coach Zedekiah Otieno with plenty to ponder over.

The Kenyans' defence never looked comfortable all afternoon and they were exposed as early as the fourth minute when they failed to clear a long throw in allowing Mouza to rise unchallenged to head home.

But Kenya responded almost immediately, with Dennis Ochieng returning the favour with a headed goal from Kevin Ochieng’s cross on nine minutes.

It was a relief for Oliech who had not scored an international since 2009 and his work rate earlier in the match betrayed his hunger.

Oliech should have scored his and Kenya’s second in the 18th minute after John Njoroge had picked him perfectly from a swift Kenya move but the Auxerre man horribly fluffed his effort.

Elkhadir did not make a mistake at the other end timing his run perfectly eight minutes later to beat the flat Kenya defence formation and give keeper Boniface Oluoch no chance with a venomous drive.

John Baraza’s goal was disallowed for off side in the 43rd minute as Kenya frantically finished the first half.
The dangerous Elkhadir could have made it three goals for Sudan but let off another poor piece of defending from Kenya with a hurried attempt.

The Sudanese retreated to a defensive red wall on their half as Kenya desperately chased for an equalizer.
Inter Milan’s McDonald Mariga was introduced together with Bob Mugalia as Harambee Stars continued to search.

Mariga almost got Kenya’s second with a sliding effort but a Sudanese boot just did enough to deflect the goal-bound ball for a corner.

A neat move by Kenya set up Mugalia for a one-two with Oliech but the Congolese turned Kenyan shot straight at goalkeeper Eyhab Zukbir.

It summed up Stars’s afternoon. They dominated possession but lacked that cutting edge.

If any consolation to the local fans the sponsors, electronics makers LG, gave them freebies and treated them to a fireworks display after the match.
