Warriors' giant 39 place leap in FIFA rankings!

Warriors" giant 39 place leap in FIFA rankings!

Zimbabwe's senior national soccer team, the Warriors, made probably the biggest leap they have ever made, when they moved an incredible 39 places on the latest Coca-Cola FIFA world rankings released on Wednesday to end the day on 87th in the world.

For a team that sat on a disappointing 126th place only in May, to find themselves now sitting among the top 100 soccer playing nations sounds incredible, and feels like almost a miracle. But, Yes! You are not dreaming. It is true and amazing ofcourse.

The latest rankings reveal that Zimbabwe gained a cool 161 points, bouyed by the famous, but expected 2-1 victory over then 66th ranked Mali to ease into 39 places higher up the rankings, at 87. Mali's loss has seen them shed 8 places on world rankings.

The gulf between the two teams in terms of world rankings was ernomous, and one needed to almost double Mali's ranking to  come closer to the pathetic position that the Warriors found themselves.

But just one victory in football can bring such a huge difference. ZIFA, it is hoped will be inspired by this result to arrange friendly matches for the Warriors to continue improving their FIFA ranking, and chances of qualifying for AFCON 2012.

Even FIFA found space and time to make a special mention of nations that have made incredible gains, especially African teams led by Zimbabwe. Liberia became the 2nd biggest mover, jumping 32 places to sit on 125th position.

The Comoros, Sierra Leone and the Central African Republic also made good gains, moving 24, 23 and 22 places up respectively.

In Africa, Cote d'Ivoire rules the roost, having moved seven places into 14th place in the world and 1st in Africa. Burkina Faso are showing great form and sit as the 4th best in Africa and 37th in the world.

South Africa have shed 9 places despite a good result away in Egypt on 5 June. Their hosts on the day, the Pharaohs gained only 2 places to move back into 34th position, while lost ground by 18 places, but at 33, they remain 2nd in Africa.
