Bunamwaya out of CECAFA Kagame Cup

Bunamwaya out of CECAFA Kagame Cup

Uganda’s 2009/2010 champions Bunnamwaya was yesterday eliminated from CECAFA Kagame cup after crashing 2-1 to Tanzanian’s side Simba FC in a win that left Uganda-born coach Moses Basena on the road to his first trophy in charge of the Tanzanian side.

Defender Ronald Seku’s own goal after nine minutes gave the Tanzanians an early lead but a screamer of a goal, and a contender for goal of the day from Mike Mutyaba 11 minutes later ensured the teams went to recess level.

Sadly for the battling Ugandan side, a defensive mix-up with six minutes to play allowed Evan Jerry Santos to book Simba a semifinal date with Sudan’s El Mereikh tomorrow and Bunnamwaya an early flight back home.

Being their maiden Kagame Cecafa Club Championship, coach Edward Golola’s men will be pleased with their overall performance having scored eight goals, conceded two less in four matches and made it to the quarterfinals.

"Now I have seen what the tournament is like," said Golola.

"Next year when we come back, we will do a better job. The boys have reached somewhere and we have given it our all." But their all wasn’t good enough. They poured forward in numbers early, with Mutyaba spanning a glorious opportunity," Golola added.

Bunnamwaya were made to for their errors early into the match as Simba counter-attacked, leaving the central defensive pair of Seku and Edward Ssali in disarray before Seku miscued a tame cross into his own net.

Mutyaba respondend with a scorcher which caught Simba goalkeeper Juma Kasejja out of position and Golola punching the air in jubilation. The second half saw Simba dominating possession but without actually inflicting much harm on Bunnamwaya.

"We’ve been playing well but finding difficulty in scoring," said Simba coach Basena, whose other Ugandan import Derrick Walulya was withdrawn with a groin injury.

"But today we created the chances and got the important goals," the Simba coach added. Basena and Walulya joined Simba this season.
