Swallows sign CAPS" Gidza Mapemba

SOWETO giants Moroka Swallows have snapped up CAPS United roving right back Gilbert Mapemba, snatching him from under the nose fellow ABSA Premiership side Platinum Stars who took their time to make their intentions known about the signing the player.

Gidza ended up in the nest camp on trial after Owen da Gama took his time to give the player final feedback after the defender impressed on trial at Dinaledi weeks before he joined the Dube Birds.

Gordon Igesund, the Swallows coach, wasted no time in securing the signature of the Zimbabwe Warriors' defender, and signed the player this week.

Mapemba has signed a three-year contract with the Dube Birds, as announced by the club on its website on Tuesday.

“We are delighted to announce that the club has agreed terms with Caps United in Zimbabwe for the purchase of Zim international right-back, Gilbert Mapemba.

"He is a versatile football player who is a very talented overlapping fullback and his skills will assist the Dube Birds to play out from the back.

“The club is delighted to have another top quality player joining the squad, we wish him a warm welcome to the Nest,” the club statement said.

Securing a move abroad for Mapemba was long coming after blinding performances by the talented player in CAPS' as well as the colours of the national team. Having turned 26 only yesterday, the move to the ABSA premiership was fitting.

At Swallows, Mapemba will join former teammate at CAPS, attacking midfielder Oscar Machapa who moved to the Dube Birds a year ago.

CAPS has been in the business of selling players to the ABSA premiership, having sold seven players in a space of a year, and apart from Machapa and Mapemba they have also sold Lionel Mtizwa, Method Mwanjali and Nyasha Mushekwi who all joined Mamelodi Sundowns, Khama Billiat and Tafadzwa Rusike who were bought by Ajax Cape Town.

Another CAPS player who is currently playing for a PSL team in South Africa is big goalkeeper Energy Murambadoro of Bidvest Wits.
