Benni McCarthy moving to Pirates?

South Africa's all-time leading goal scorer Benni McCarthy is strongly linked with a move Orlando Pirates for the upcoming 2011/2012 ABSA Premier Soccer League season.

Benni's much anticipated switch from the Barclays English Premiership to last season' PSL treble winners was fuelled by the sight of the one-time golden boy of South Africa football after the enigmatic player who attended the Carling Black Label final between Pirates and Chiefs on Saturday at the Soccer City stadium, apparently as a guest of Pirates chairman Irvin Khoza.

McCarthy is rumoured to be currently engaged in negotiations with the Buccaneers over a possible return home for the former Porto, Blackburn and Westham striker.

Benni himself has stated in unequivocal terms that he will be competing in the local topflight league this season.

Speaking to, Benni was cagey about where he is moving to amid reported interest from the top three Gauteng clubs namely Chiefs, Bucs and Mamelodi Sundowns, but was clear about competing in the PSL this season.

"I'm not in a position to answer any question about my future, I wanted it (his next move) to be a surprise for everyone", McCarthy told Supersport over the weekend.

"I am 150% sure that I will be competing in the PSL," he delcared.

McCarthy is a UEFA Champions league with Jose Mourinho during his days at Portuguese giants FC Porto, and was the top goal scorer in Portugal topflight league that season.

The former Bafana Bafana internantional has failed to last at either Blackburn or Westham, not because he lacks talent or ability, but because of unpsecified problems which manifested themselves in form weight challenges.

Benni grabbed headlines for Bafana Bafana when he scored four goals at the CAF African Nations Cup finals against neighbours Namibia in Burkina Faso in 1998.

His move to Ajax Amsterdam at the peak of his young talent has been credited with the birth of the twinning agreement between the Dutch club and Ajax Cape Town.
