Makonese joins Shabanie Mine FC

 Makonese joins Shabanie Mine FC

Following a hoax of an e-mail which torched ugly and incorrect news reports that former Zimbabwe Warriors defender Zvenyika Makonese had passed away in a car accident in Ngundu, Beezsports can report that in fact, the former Orlando Pirates defender is alive and has returned home to join Shabanie Mine Football club in Zimbabwe's topflight league.

"Shoggy", as the player is affectionately known, is currently in Harare, awaiting a reverse clearance certificate from ZIFA after he was released from his contract by Orlando Pirates on June 14.

The player's contract was terminated by Pirates in the most of unusual ways, reportedly via a text message in which the player was invited to come to the Bucs Offices to collect his clearance letter.

Makonese, a very talented defender whose career has blighted by rumours of ill-discipline and other off-field problems, did not play as regularly as he was expected to at Pirates. At one point he was believed to be on his way to becoming one of the best defenders Bucs had ever signed.

In a SOWETO derby two years ago, Makonese was in such outstanding form and he was seen chasing Knowledge Musona and overtaking him with such ease to the amazement of many spectators and soccer analysts.

Makonese kept Musona under a tight lid in two matches in the 2009/2010 season, before Musona found the formula to terrorise the Bucs defenders a season later.

Makonese can now put aside his troubles at Bucs as he looks forward to a new life at the club that gave him fame and an opportunity to play for the Warriors, from where Cape side Santos snapped him up several years ago.

“I have decided to rejoin Shabanie on a short-term contract, and I will play for them in their remaining games because they are in a tricky situation, faced with relegation.

“My plan is to play for them for a short period after which I will come back to South Africa to play for another club," Makonese told Kick-Off soccer magazine yesterday.

“Pirates gave me my clearance on June 14 so I am sorted with them and the only thing that I am waiting for now is to get a reverse international clearance via Zifa that will enable Shabanie to register me in the [Zimbabwean] PSL,” Shoggy revealed.

The veteran defender found time to reflect on the 'terrible' news about his alleged death.

“What happened is that my friend was driving my car and got involved in an accident on Friday night in Ngundu [in Zimbabwe].

“I am sure people then just assumed that it was me who was driving it as it was seriously damaged. The car is now back home in Chiredzi but I haven’t seen the extent of the damage but I am told it is very serious,” Makonese said.
