Mighty Warriors shine in Germany

Zimbabwe female footballers have been in Germany for the past two weeks, playing several German football clubs and University select side in what has been an eye-catching tour and a very crucial preparatory camp for the All-Africa games.

After winning the their maiden COSAFA Women's Championship title on home soil in June, the Warriors were rewarded with a training camp in Germany. They were supposed to have been joined by the Under 20 side, but ZIFA was unprepared to foot the extra traveling expenses.

After claiming the scalp of many second tier German football clubs, Zimbabwe's litmus test was always going to be presented by a team in the top division of German Women football, the Bundesliga.

On Wednesday the Mighty Warriors had to prove that their good performances thus far in Germany were no fluke when they faced top club  Hamburger SV in a high profile encounter graced by officials from the Germany Football Federation and the Germany Olympic Committee.

Zimbabwe's soccer queens emerged out of the match with theri reputation unscathed, as they battled to a 2-2 draw against Hamburger, earning the praises of the German Bundesliga team's coach.

"I was really impressed by Zimbabwe national team. Here we have a first, second and third Bundesliga league," Feifel said.

"We have good resources and trainers. The clubs are organised but today we didn't see any difference. We were at par with Zimbabwe and the Zimbabweans were very aggressive and very good in forward positions.

"I think Zimbabwe was the better side and had the possibility of winning the game, especially in the last 30 minutes. It was a good experience playing an African national team and really they showed us that there is no difference between their game and our game,"  Feifel added.

The Germans went ahead twice through Silva Salander's free-kick which gave the home side the lead, before  Carolin Simon restored Hamburger's lead after Zimbabwe had canceled out Salander's goal.

The Mighty Warriors fought back twice, scoring the first equaliser through Rudo Neshamba who connected from Majoury Nyaumwe, probably Zimbabwe's most outstanding and sought after player during this tour.

At the opening of the second half, again two Mighty Warriors players combined emmaculately.  Ntombiyelanga Ndlovu scored from an Emmaculate Msipa tantalising cross to restore parity.

The match ended a highly productive tour and the Mighty Warriors appear ready to do battle in a tough All Africa Games group which incude Ghana and Banyana Banyana who are looking forward to an early opportunity to avenge their COSAFA final defeat.
