Mabizela's shock Wits move

Mbulelo Old John Mabizela has stunned the South African soccer loving public by signing a 2-year deal to join Bidvest Wits when everyone expected him to complete a move to Ajax Cape Town with whom he had spent the past two weeks training and had even done a medical.

Wits coach Roger De Sa announced on Wednesday that OJ signed a deal with his club at its Johannesburg Offices today over the lunch hour.

"Hes a free agent so were not buying or signing him really. Its about giving him a chance to play again. He sure is a good player so why not?" De Sa said.

Stung by how his defence allowed Kaizer Chiefs to stage a dramatic comeback on Sunday, and how his team failed to capitalise on its dominance over their more fnacnied opponents in the MTN Super8 quarter-final clash due to densive frailties, De Sa had to act fast.

"We are a bit short in defence, Derrick [Spencer] is there, but having lost Tefu [Mashamaite], I think we needed someone with experience in the defence," explained the Wits coach.

What happened is that Ajax took their time to finalise a deal to sign Mabizela. While they were taking their time, Roger decided to speak to OJ personally and ask him if he was willing to join his club.

OJ responded by asking Wits to make him an offer, which De Sa did. OJ immediately flew to Johannesburg and signed the deal to become a Wits player.

Ajax will feel out-smarted by a club that showed enough desperation to rope the talented defender  in.

OJ has had his fair share of disciplinary problems with a number of PSL clubs, the latest of which is Platinum Stars who did not renew his contract when it expired last season.

Despite his problems, there is no doubting OJ's talent, and the fact that Wits snapped him without even giving him a trial is evidence of the abundance of his talent. It is surely Ajax's loss.
