Nyadombo deserves a Warriors chance

Nyadombo deserves a Warriors chance

Former Gunners central defender Carlington Nyadombo's consistent performances in the heart of South African ABSA premiership club Amazulu will surely increase the calls to have the defender called for duty by the Zimbabwe Warriors technical team.

Nyadombo, who has been with Durban club Amazulu, affectionately known as Usuthu  since last season, is not a popular name in his own country and is one of the most underrated defenders in the country.

The big defender who reminds many of big Dickson Choto who plies his trade in Poland's Ekstralasa league, is a key player in the Amazulu team which now boasts three Zimbabweans after the arrival of Tapuwa Kapini, who has already been made captain of the team.

Ramson Zhuwawo, a former Zimbabwe Footballer of the Season is also with the Durban-based topflight club.

On a Sunday afternoon in Amazulu's 2011/2012 ABSA PSL opening fixture against giants Mamelodi Sundowns in Pretoria, Nyadombo put on a vintage display of great defending and was befittingly named Man-of-the-match.

The central defender exhibited great reading of the game, aerial strength, well-timed tackles and clearances to frustrate the Sundowns strikers who included Bafana Bafana chief striker Katlego Mphela and Warriors gunman Nyasha Mushekwi.

At 25, and standing at approximately 1.90metres Nyadombo still has age on his side, and this is the right time for Norman Mapeza to begin giving players like him the chance to prove their worthy to the national team cause.

There is surely no reason why the Warriors should rely on Method Mwanjale and Thomas Sweswe in central defence and not increase the pool of quality defenders.

When the country faces big strikers from African countries in the West and Northern Africa, we should be able to unleash quality big defenders like Carlington Nyandombo.

If Mapeza can give a chance to Willard Katsande who sometimes doesn not even make it to the bench at Ajax Cape Town, but proves to be a worth addition to the midfield pool, there is reason in giving players who feature regularly for their foreign clubs an opportunity to prove what they can offer to the country.
