Maroons in Nairobi, KCC lose as Villa draw

Ugandan’s Maroons Football Club will intensify their pre-season preparations ahead of the much anticipated Uganda Super League (USL) 2011/12 season with a tour of Nairobi, Kenya.

Asaph Mwebaze’s outfit, bankrolled by Uganda Prisons, will leave for Uganda’s East African neighbours with a squad of 25 players today . Their tour will see the two-time league winners face Kenya Premier League table leaders Tusker, 2009 kings Sofapaka and lower tier side Paradise.

And that’s the challenge Mwebaze wants his lads to face if they are to get a head start in the season, which starts with a game against Proline in one of two live matches on SuperSport September 9.

"If you look at the games we lost or drew against the big sides last season, you notice my boys were overwhelmed. They were not used to hostile grounds like when playing Villa at Nakivubo," Mwebaze told the Daily Monitor.

"This tour will help address part of the nerves. It will expose them to all those conditions and competitive football," Mwebaze added.

Elsewhere, league record champions (16 titles) SC Villa continued their shyness in front of goal, being held by Tanzania’s Kagera at Namboole on Friday. Coach Srdjan Zivojnov’s side drew goalless in their first friendly against another Tanzanian side Azam on Thursday.

At Nakivubo, KCC were handed a wake-up call by Azam who beat them 3-0, with Khamis Micha netting a brace to total three goals on the tour, and Tchetche Kipre scoring the other. Paddy Muhumuza grabbed his second pre-season goal and Patrick Edema added the other in Proline’s 2-0 defeat of lowly Misindye at Lugogo.
