KENYA: Sony beats wandering Rangers

Isaiah Omondi and Hugo Nzoka were in superb form as they led Sony Sugar to a 2-0 victory over Rangers in Awendo on Sunday ina Kenya Premier Soccer League match.

In Thika, champions Ulinzi Stars rallied from behind to earn a deserved point as Western Stima stunned Kenya Commercial Bank 1-0 in Nairobi. It was Sony’s first win in three games and coach Francis Baraza was an elated man.

"We deserved to win. We have been unlucky in our lat two games but I am very happy today," said Baraza, who saw his side lose from set pieces against Sofapaka and Tusker in the last two games.

Rangers were reduced to ten men when Hashim Mukhwana was sent off for a bad tackle on Mike Simiyu and the sugarmillers took advantage to score the second goal after dictating the second half.

Sony had missed several scoring opportunities, the main culprit being Mrwa Chamberi, who later came off for Nzoka.

80th-minute penalty

Omondi headed Sony ahead in the 24th minute, netting his seventh goal of the season to give the home side a deserved lead.

With the hosts in the lead and Rangers struggling to create chances, frustration set in for the visitors, with Mukhana taking out Simiyu with a dangerous tackle just a minute to the break.

Nzoka ended any hopes Rangers had in the 80th minute with a thunderous strike.

In Thika, Richard Chege was the soldiers’ hero as he scored a late goal past a stranded goalkeeper Lucas Indeche of Thika.

Thika had gone ahead thanks to a Francis Kahata strike in the 11th minute.

They held on until late in the scond half when Chege struck for the champions.

The point moves Ulinzi up to 34 points from 20 games to remain fourth, while Thika, who remain 10rh, have 25 points from 20 games.

At the City Stadium, an 80th minute penalty by veteran Mark Sirengo earned visiting Western Stima three crucial points over Kenya Commercial Bank in an evenly-contested match.
