Ajax lose Katsande to Chiefs

Katsande will soon be seen in Kaizer Chiefs colours after signing a 3-year deal on Monday

Ajax Cape Town have confirmed their shock decision to sell highly talented and very versatile midfielder Willard Katsande to Kaizer Chiefs for around R1 million.

Katsande joins Amakhosi on a three year deal after agreeing personal terms with the club. Ajax were eager to do business with Chiefs to free up one foreign place for their new foreign signing, rumoured to be Angolan striker Antonio Carrera.

For some strange reasons, Ajax have failed to recognise the abundance of Katsande's ability for the entire season the player was on the books of the Urban Warriors. To some extent, injuries have contributed to the Zimbabwe international's limited appearances at the Cape club.

Bobby Motaung, Kaizer Chiefs Team Manager and Donald Ace Khuse travelled to Zimbabwe with a view to unearthing new talent during the Warriors/Zambia friendly on 10 August, but after watching Katsande in inspired form, the could resist what they saw.

Few days after the friendly match, Chiefs were willing to splash a million of rands and the deal to bring "Bute" to Naturena was concluded by the parties on Monday, when the player agreed personal terms with Amakhosi.

Katsande has been one of the reasons why Zimbabwe has started playing to their strength. After many years of looking for a good impact player and a play-maker, Zimbabwe's Warriors have finally found that player in Katsande.

During the Warriors 2-1 victory over Mali in an African Nations Cup, Katsande came on as a substitute to provide the pass that saw Karuru getting into the box from where he earned a penalty which Musona converted on second attempt.

On 10 August against Zambia's Chipolopolo, Katsande was given a starting role and he made such a solid combination with Tinashe Nengomasha and hence Zimbabwe's dominance of their opponents in a 2-0 victory at Rufaro Stadium.

Perhaps Bobby Motaung was encouraged by the telepathic understanding between the compatriots that he decided to have the Warriors due in one team, Kaizer Chiefs.

After about 6 months Ajax are likely to regret their decisions to let Katsande go. One thing is certain, Bute will flourish in Chiefs colours. He is such a talented player who was unfortunate at the Urban Warriors not to get enough game time.
