Warriors' gigantic Fifa rankings leap...again!

Warriors" gigantic Fifa rankings leap...again!

There appears to be a spring in the Zimbabwe Warriors' step these days, with news that the nation is the biggest mover in the latest Fifa rankings for the second time in a row. The Warriors moved twelve places to now sit at 74th position in world rankings.

World soccer governing body released latest rankings on Wednesday, and Zimbabwe's crucial friendly 2-0 victory over northern neighbours Zambia has catapulted the nation to a respectable 74th position, from the 86th spot they occupied during the July rankings.

Rankings have proved critical for seeding purposesduring draws of qualifiers for major international tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup.

Zimbabwe Football Association has always been criticised for failing to give the Warriors proper preparations ahead of major games, resulting in lethargic performances by the team.

The nation's failure to qualify for the last World Cup and the AFCON in 2010 have all been blamed on the failure by ZIFA to arrange friendly matches and support the national team adequately.

Norman Mapeza's leadership and ZIFA support should be commended for seeing the nation jump close 51 places in Fifa rankings in just two months. Thats an incredible improvement and there is no better testimony to the coaching abilities of Mapeza.

If Mapeza had been confirmed on time as Warriors' substantive coach, the team could be almost certain of qualifying for the 2012 AFCON finals. But thats water under the bridge now. The Warriors are looking very promising.

The Warriors's best ranking so far is the number 40 reached in 1995. YES! The Warriors can scale those dizzy heights once again.
