Gyan and Ayew were not available for Ghana as the Black Stars lost 0-1 to Brazil in England

World soccer powerhouse Brazil laboured to a slender 1-0 victory over battling Ghana in a friendly match played at Fulham's Craven Cottage Stadium on Monday night.

Leandro Damiao, who received his first international call-up only in March against Scotland, scored the lone goal at Craven Cottage in the 45th minute to give Brazil the lead.

Damaio latched onto an a precise pass from Fernandino, and scrored a fantastic goal from the tightest of angles, on a night where much was expected from two sides famed for their slick-passing game. None of that was on display last night.

Even the return of Ronaldinho did not provide the sparks expected of such a high profile friendly match. It is possible that both teams came to the match tired from a tough past two months.

Brazil were playing at the Copa America about over a month ago, while Ghana played in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Swaziland only last Friday.

English referee Mike Dean handled the encounter like a World Cup final, reportedly issuing out eight yellow cards including the two shown to Daniel Opare, the second for clipping Lucio, and had to leave the field for an early shower in the 32nd minute.

The sending off of Opare somewhat changed the atmosphere of the match, as Ghana literally stopped playing and attempted to defend against a Samba team known for its attacking abilities.

Ghana's defence mode saw the enterprising Neymar, tormenting the Africans' defence, comng close to scoring early into the second half. Second half subsitute Pato of AC Milan thought he had found Brazil's second goal, but was denied by the in-form Ghana keeper Adam Kwarasey.

Menezes, the coach of Brazil who came under fierce criticism back at home for the team's laclustre performances during their quarter-final exit at the Copa America, does not appear to have appeased his critics even with the friendly win over 10-men Ghana.
