Benjani in Manchester City Colours

Out of contract Zimbabwe Warriors captain Benjamin Mwaruwari (Benjani) is reportedly on the wanted list of a number of English clubs who are looking at bolstering their playing squads ahead of the opening of the English Premiership  Soccer  League. The English season is due to start on 14 August.

Benjani became a free agent at the end of last season after Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini decided that he no longer required the services of the striker who had spent a short spell on loan at Sunderland under Steve Bruce. The former Portsmouth and Auxerre hitman endured a  barren spell at Sunderland in which he really never featured prominently for the Black Cats and never scored for them in about six months. Benjani has also endured a long goaless spell in England since December 2008. The one time leading goal scorer in England during a 2007/2008 season with Portsmouth has been dogged by injuries. He has since recovered fully now and gave his best performance in many months when he featured for Zimbabwe against Brazil in a high profile friendly match on June 2 in Harare.

The Daily Express reports that Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are all eyeing Benjani and will have to battle it out among themselves to secure the signature of the former Man City striker.

It will not be the first time that the Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce has been linked with the player. The enigmatic coach is known to be a great admirer of Benjani, having tried to lure him to Ewood Park last season, and subsequently losing out to Sunderland. It appears that the Blue and Whites will have to battle other clubs again for the signature of Benjani.

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy is looking at bringing in more firepower upfront for the new campaign, despite having spent 7 million already on Steven Fletcher who was captured from Burnley. McCarthy is believed to be very eager to give the 31 year-old a chance to shine again in England.

West Ham under new coach Avram Grant are looking at acquiring new strikers for the 2010/2011 season. The Israeli who was at Portsmouth last season, appears to be interested in roping in the former Fratton Park hero Benjani. The Zimbabwean captain was the darling of the Fratton Park crowd during his succesful spell at Portsmouth.

English clubs have up until the 31st August to finalise their signings for the new season. Benjani is already in England trying to sort out his future in the Premiership.
