ABSA PSL Wednesday round-up

Every ABSA Premier Soccer League club was in action on Wednesday night, and there no major upsets on the night, except the defeat of former log leaders Kaizer Chiefs by Ajax Cape Town away in the mother city.

Ajax Cape Town 2-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Terror Fanteni scored from the penalty in the 20th minute after forcing keeper Itumeleng Khune to commit a foul inside the box, and the former Maccabi Haifa striker converted the kick with easy, beating Bafana's number One. Lebohang Manyama then stole the lead in the 75th minute against the run of play. Chiefs dominated the match, and struck the post twice in the match. Amakhosi at least deserved a point out of the beautiful Cape Town Stadium.

Orlando Pirates 1-0 Santos

Defending Champions Orlando Pirates were fortunate to leave their home ground Orlando Stadium with maximum points after squandering numerous chances and living on the edge for much of their match against Santos. Ndumiso Mabena rescued the home team with a solitary strike. The loss was Santos' fourth consecutive defeat this season. Bobby Solomosn must be a worried man by now.

SuperSport United 3-0 Black Leopards

Atusaye Nyondo led the rout as Supersport beat visiting Leopards convincingly and climb to second position on the log. Gavin Hunt's former champions have started the season much better than they did last season, when they spent much of the season fighting relegation, something that the club is not known for.

Moroka Swallows 2-1 Free State Stars

David Mathebula scored a beauty from the free-kick in the 32nd minute, with captain Lefa Tstsulupa adding a second in the 41st to give the Dube Birds a 2-0 lead going into half time. Stars returned from the break and scored what turned out to be just a consolation through substitute Boitumelo Sekgobela in the 78th minute. The win was Gordon Igesund's team's second in four games, a much better start to last season when they needed to collect six points in the final game of the season to assured of safety.

Bloemfontein Celtic 1-1 Maritzburg United

Lennox Bacela equalised for the home team Celtic to earn them a point in a league clash at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium. United had taken the lead through Diyo Sibisi in the 38th minute.

Golden Arrows 3-1 Platinum Stars

A team of talented players like Arrows had to bounce back from a winless streak at some point, and they chose Wednesday night to do exactly that, beating visiting Stars 3-1 at home to collect their first full set of points. Terrence Mandaza scored Stars' face saver late in the second half, after he came in as a substitute.
