Uganda Cranes ' Wasswa finally a free man

Uganda Cranes Defender Hassan Wasswa was finally set free after authorities in Turkey fined him 1,059 euros (Shs4.12m) following his accusation of Drug trafficking.

This comes a few days after Cranes coach Bobby Williamson showed belief in him by including his name in the provisionary team to train for the key Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Kenya next month, Wasswa is now a free man.

The Karabuskor defender, on loan at Kayseri Erciyesspor, was arrested at Ataturk airport last week with 5.5 grams of cannabis. He was returning to Turkey after travelling with the national team to Angola where he was an unsued substitute.

The player, outstanding in the 2-0 home victory over Guinea Bissau in June, seemed to have wrecked his career after the misdemeanor. However the penalty for cannabis is usually treated leniently inTurkey compared to offences relating to possession of drugs like cocaine and opium.

Late yesterday, Wasswa was searching for 155 euros (Shs600,000) to travel to his club to learn the fate of his contract. Friends and family members of the player are reportedly disappointed in the player, whom they say has failed to 'grow up.’ They are particularly concerned that since his meteoric rise, he has not coped well with his fame.

His lifestyle has left a lot to be desired, since his transfer from South Africa to Turkey. Wasswa, a son of former KCC player Hassan Biruma, will be delighted by the reprieve but a cloud hangs over his immediate future.

He is due to fly back to Kampala for preparations for the match against Kenya. But what happens after that is anybody’s guess.

If Kayseri Erciyesspor and Karabuskor opt to terminate his deal, he will have to embark on a search for new employers.

The rigors of securing a professional contract, as Wasswa - once of KCC - knows so well, are very complex.
