KENYA:Sofapaka snatches late win from the bankers as Western stima hold City stars

Former Kenyan champions Sofapaka squeezed a narrow 1-0 victory over KCB in a Kenyan Premier League match at the City Stadium on Saturday.

Striker John Baraza accounted for the all-important goal when he headed in Osborne Monday’s cross in the first half.

Sofapaka always looked the most likely to score the match’s second goal but it was KCB who got the best opportunity when they were awarded a penalty in the second half.

Eugene Asike could only watch in despair as Sofapaka goalkeeper Duncan Ochieng kept out his spot kick. It pretty much summed up a horrid spell for KCB who were one time considered championship contenders.

For the bankers, the loss continues a woeful run of form that has seen the side lose their last six games sliding down the log as a result. They are now tenth on 29 points.

Congo United 1 Chemelil 0

Congo United put up a good show to stun visiting Chemelil Sugar 1-0 at Mbaraki Sports Club. Congo’s prolific striker, Mwachiponi Kea, signed during the mid season transfer period, once again showed his worth heading home the winning goal on 37 minutes.

Liberian Morris Dukuly combined well with Ramdhan Athman Mbuggus before releasing Allan Omondi who sent a cracking shot that was punched back into play by Chemelil goalkeeper, Fredrick Onyango. Kea was well positioned to take advantage.

The noisy celebration from the Congo fans after the final whistle showed how much this victory meant to the regulation threatened side.

Coach Juma Abdalla Swaleh said the players played as per his instructions and the win has given  him more confidence to fight for survival.

The former Thika United coach appears to have turned the fortunes of Congo.

Western Stima 1 City Stars 1

Western Stima came from a goal down to hold Nairobi City Stars to a one all draw in an exciting match at Bukhungu Stadium.

Skipper Donald Mosoti put City Stars ahead from the penalty spot on seven minutes after defender Kevin Oluoch had impeded a striker in the area forcing referee Nicodemus Marani to point to the spot. Alloice Mangi levelled matters for Stima with a fine finish in the 58th minute.

"It was a tough game but I am happy we managed to get a point though I felt we should have taken all three points," Western Stima coach Henry Omino said.
