Warriors rise to 66th on FIFA rankings

The Zimbabwe senior national soccer team, the Warriors continued their march up the global soccer rankings when they moved eight places to now sit on the 66th position on the latest FIFA Men's World  Rankings, released on Wednesday.

The Warriors jumped from 74th position to 66th, after garnering 56 points since the last world rankings, thanks to a purple patch they have enjoyed since August. On September 4 the Warriors defeated Liberia to move to 2nd position in Group A of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Zimbabwe's victory in early September was preceded by another morale boosting win against 62nd ranked Mali in the previous qualifier at Rufaro Stadium. Norman Mapeza's men then followed up that victory with a 2-0 friendly win over Zambia on 10 August.

In terms of continental rankings, the Warriors have also jumped three places to now become the 14th best African soccer-playing nation, still seven places away from Zimbabwe's best ever African ranking, when the nation was 7th best in Africa in 1995.

While it is important to savour the moment of the sustained upward movement on the global rankings, the Warriors, technical bench and ZIFA should never get a feeling that they have arrived.

There is a long way to go, and the Warriors need to beat the 40th world ranking milestone achieved in April 1995. The immediate task is for the Warriors to qualify for the 2012 Afcon finals in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, and the Brazil 2014 World Cup.
