Warriors players in Europe: round up and update

[Posted 03 Oct 2011]

Big Mike scored for FC Vaslui in the Europa League on Thursday last week.

Warriors players plying their trade in European topflight leagues met with mixed fortunes over the past weekend.

Germany Bundesliga

There were celebrations for Warriors top striker Knowledge Musona whose cub TSG 1899 Hoffenheim put brakes on Bayern Munich's 10-match unbeaten run by holding them to a 0-0 draw at home. Musona was a second-half subsitute for Hoffenheim on Saturday.

Germany is ranked 3rd on the FIFA Rankings, behind top ranked nation Spain and 2nd placed Netherlands. The Germany Bundesliga is probably the third-best league in Europe after the English Barclays Premiership and the Spanish Primera Division.

English Premiership

Former Warriors captain Benjamin 'Benjani' Mwaruwari played the entire match for Portsmouth in 0-1 losing cause against Leeds last weekend. Though the 'Undertaker' sweated it out in search of an equaliser, Portsmouth came out second best.

England is currently ranked 8th on the Fifa rankings.

Belgium's Pro-League/Jupiler

Enterprising Warriors versatile player Vusa Nyoni scored a goal for Germinal Beerrschot as they drew 1-1 with Club Brugges in a league match played last weekend at the Olympisch Stadion in Antwerp. Nyoni, who can play as either an attacking midfielder or a a left back, scored in the 90+2 minutes to level scores for his club.

Belgium has made tremendous progress and is now sitting where it belongs on position 34 on the Fifa rankings, and the nation has been doing exceptionally well in Euro qualifiers.

Cypriot Division 1

Noel Kaseke celebrated a victory with Cypriot champions Omonia Nicosia who overcame Ermis 2-0 at the Neo GSP Stadium over the weekend, to remain unbeaten on 4 games, and with 10 points to their credit. Kaseke who has now fully recovered, played the entire 90 minutes.

Cyprus is currently ranked 86th on the Fifa rankings, exactly 20 places below Zimbabwe.

Danish Superligaen

Quincy Antipas has also recovered and played the full match for SønderjyskE in the Danish Superligaen, but his club lost Nordsjælland who are third placed, while Antipas's team remains 8th on the log. Antipas has thus far scored twice for his European club and is yet to score for Zimbabwe, where he plays mostly as a right-sided attacking midfielder.

Denmark is ranked 17th best ranked nation on the Fifa World rankings, a very strong ranking.

Romanian Liga

Mike Temwanjira scored for FC Vaslui midweek during a Europa League group stages match against visiting FC Zurich of Switzerland, but his team had to deal with the agony of drawing 2-2 at home, for a second draw with an identical scoreline after fighting for a draw against Italian Serie A club Lazio two weeks earlier.

Romania is ranked 49th on the Fifa rankings, a real fall from grace for a country that was once ranked 13th best in the world a few years ago. The league in Romania remains a strong league as evidence by the strong presence and good performances of teams such Vaslui, Rapid Bucharesti and Steau Bucharesti in the Europa League.

Russia's Premier League

Musawenkosi Mguni was a second half substitute (came in in the 72nd minute) for his club Terek Grozny who lost 0-1 to Spartak Nal'chik at home to remain on the 12th position on the log, after 26 games. With only four games ramining to the end of the season, Terek need to win at least two of those matches to secure their place in the elite division in Russia.

Russia is ranked 13th in the world.

Zimbabwean players have not been doing well in the MLS, with Joseph Ngwenya and Mkhokeli Dube getting content with coming from the bench or sitting on the bench for the entire 90 minutes in most matches.

Over the weekend, Ngwenya's DC United lost 1-2 to Columbus Crew, with the Zimbabwean, once on the books of Bayern Munich, coming on in the second half. Kheli Dube was an unused substitute as New England Revolution lost 1-2 to Seattle Sounders at home.
