Warriors delay departure to Praia

Musona expected to spearhead Warriors" attack against Cape Verde

The Warriors have been rescued by a government bail out after struggling to raise the air-tickets for the team to fly out to Praia, Cape Verde for a final and crucial qualfiying match in the Africa Cup of Nations 2012 campaign.

Shocking revelations were that the Warriors failed to leave for Cape Verde via Dakar Senegal as initiall planned, due to financial constraints. What is surprising is that ZIFA has always known of this fixture and its significance to the team's progression, but chose to approach the government late for a bail out.

Indications from Zimbabwe are that the Warriors are now scheduled to leave Harare on Tuesday evening, and will pick-up most of the South Africa-based players at the OR Tambo airport before departing for Praia via Dakar.

The Kaizer Chiefs pair of Willard Katsande and Zhainu Jambo will leave Harare togehter with the local delegation comprising Daniel Veremu, keeper Washington Arrubi and Tapiwa Khumbuyani.

Tinashe Nengomasha, Thomas Sweswe, captain Method Mwanjali, Lincoln Zvasiya, Gilbert Mapemba, Nyasha Mushekwi, Tapuwa Kapini, Khama Billiat and Ajax Cape Town team mate Paul Tafadzwa Rusike will join the delegation in Johannesburg.

The three Europe-based stars, Vusa Nyoni, Knowledge Musona and Ovidy Karuru will fly directly from their bases and link up with the rest of the squad in Praia, Cape Verde.

The unusual travel arrangements preferred by ZIFA mean that the squad might only have just two days to train together or at all before Saturday's do or die battle against the host nation.

Edward Sadomba will not be part of that battle after injuring his shoulder during a home CAF Champions League clash against Tunisian giants Esperance at the Hilal Stadium in Omdurman over the weekend. Cuthbert Malajila has taken up his place.

Zimbabwe need an outright win against Cape Verde, who still have chances of their own to qualify for the AFCON finals to be co-hosted by Equatorial Guinea and Gabon in January2012.

With 7 points after 5 games, Cape Verde can qualify if they beat Zimbabwe, while Mali lose against Liberia in Monrovia on Saturday. However, if Zimbabwe beat Cape Verde, and Mali draw or win, Zimbabwe then wins the sole qualifying ticket from Group A.

None of Mali, Zimbabwe and Cape Verde can afford to to lose on Saturday if they entertain any hopes of qualifying, making the battles really tough in Group A.
