ZIFA to finally meet Sports Minister on finances

More than a year after the Minister of Education and Sports David Coltart expressed his desire to meet with a newly elected Zimbabwe Football Association leadership, the association has finally decided to take the minister's offer.

Coltart, who has expressed disppointment at the Warriors' failure to qualify for the AFCON finals in 2012 on his social network Facebook page, has revealed that the Zifa board has finally requested a meeting with him.

When the current Zifa leadership got into office around mid-year in 2010, Coltart invited them to arrange a meeting with him to discuss income generation and general funding for the senior national team.

Only 10 days ago, Zifa Vice President Ndumiso Gumede wrote to the Minister, taking him on his offer for a meeting. It is difficult to understand what took Zifa this long to set up a meeting with Coltart.

While it is protocol that Zifa should work through the Sports and Recreation Commission in dealing with government on matters of state funding for sports, soccer has the biggest profile as a sport in Zimbabwe and it is understandable if the minister offers to deal directly with an association.

Who knows, probably if the communication lines between Zifa and the Sports ministry were as open they should be, the Warriors may not have struggled to raise airfares for the squad, something which greatly prejudiced the team's preparation for the make or break tie against Cape Verde in Praia which the team went on to lose.

Poor preparation has been cited as the major cause for the team's dismal performance in the opening 20 minutes in Praia. The team only trained for two days, and all that preparation happened in Praia on Thursday and Friday, and the match was played on Saturday.

Coltart, Beezsports udnerstands, wants to discuss ways in which Zifa can be assisted to generate money for its own operations, without relying too much on government assistance.

With the 2013 AFCON qualifiers due to begin in January 2012, Zifa needs to know exactly where the funds will come from for such qualifiers. The coach needs to be given the opportunity to visit the foreign bases of current squad members and potential players in Europe.
