Ding-dong PSL title race continues

Ever since CAPS United and Motor Action's brief spells in charge at the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League earlier in the season, no other team has been able to open a big gap at the summit for longer than a week. FC Platinum's four point gap was slashed down to only a single point over the weekend by Dynamos.

Platinum, who went into last weekend's fixtures leading second placed Dynamos by four points, sitting on 49 points to Dembare's 45, lost to Moses Chunga's Gunners FC at Lafarge Stadium in Harare over the weekend.

During the same weekend, former champions and regular CAF Champions League participants Dynamos cruised to a morale boosting 3-1 victory over bitter rivals Highlanders at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday, with a brace from Rodrick Mutuma and goal by Martin Vengesayi.

Bosso had taken the lead through star player Eric Mudzingwa.

Motor Action, the other realistic title contenders, suffered yet another stutter to their title challenge as they failed to win away at Shabanie FC in Zvishavane. Though Motor Action remain five points adrift of leaders FC Platinum and four behind Dynamos, it will be premature to rule them out of the race yet.

The intriguing part is the tight competition at the top, with the platinum miners and their more fancied rivals Dembare almost going neck to neck at the moment.

The battle at the top is likely to remain a ding-dong battle until the end of the season. has earlier identified the FC Platinum/Dynamos fixture in week 29 as a potential title deciding fixture.

Before that crunchy affair at Maglas Stadium pitting the PSL's top two dogs, both teams have to negotiate their way past tricky opponents in weeks 27 and 28.

During those weeks, Dynamos will have to deal decisively with reigning champions and title contenders Motor Action whose fortunes have somewhat taken a nosedive at such a crucial stage. In week 28 the Harare giants have to travel away to title dark horses Hwange, who are difficult to beat at the Colliery.

FC Platinum will have to battle it out with derby rivals Shabanie Mine before visiting unpredictable Monomotapa in Harare. With better concentration, Rahman Gumbo's boys should be able to collect no less than six points despite the ties being tricky.

Motor Action in the meantime, will have to deal with a strong and revived Dynamos in week 28, a team always difficut to beat at this stage of the competition.  Before that, Joey Antipas and his boys should find it easier to skip past Shooting Stars' challenge in week 27.

What makes the title race even more interesting is the fact that even bottom teams are not easy teams to beat with only four matches left. The relegation bound clubs are known to spring surprises and derail title aspirants' dreams.

So we could see some upsets anytime from week 27 to week 30.
