Musona scoops Rookie of the Year Award for the 2009/2010 season in SA

Kaizer Chiefs young striking sensation Knowledge Musona has won the Jet Club Rookie of the year award for the 2009/2010 season in South Africa.

The award is given to the most outstanding player in his first season in the South African Premier Soccer League. For last season in particular, there were a good number of newcomers to the PSL who dished out impressive performances for many clubs and their national teams. The worth and value of Musona's award can be best seen in the light of the quality of the other nominees he beat for the award.

Names such as  former Newcastle United of the English PSL player Matthew Pattison come to mind. The Mamelodi Sundowns player had such an outstanding season that it was not surprising he was voted the Nedbank Cup Player of the tournament this year. Musona also faced competition from the winner of the PSL Younger player of the year award Siyanda Xulu, who was recently invited for trials by the mighty Barcelona. The list of stiff challengers included Orlando Pirates' midfied star Andile Jali who almost gate-crashed into Parreira's final 23 man squad for the just ended World Cup. Other nominees were Thandani Ntshumayelo of SuperSport United, Sibusiso Vilakazi (Bidvest Wits),Auguston Leornard (Moroka Swallows) and Thabo Mongalo (SuperSport United).

Musona, who was clearly Zimbabwe's best player on view in the high-profile friendly tie against Brazil in Harare, had a very good season in the Amakhosi colours for a rookie this past year. He emerged as Kaizer Chiefs' top goal scorer with five goals. Musona had outstanding performances in Chiefs' cup competitions, and scored the winning goal in his team's Telkom Charity cup final against Ajax Cape Town.

There is surely a bright future for Musona if he maintains his focus. It will not come as a surprise if he wins the Footballer of the year award in the 2010/2011 season. At his age, a move to one of the top European leagues after this season will do his career a world of good.

Kaizer Chiefs' most prized asset at the moment walked away with R50 000 which accompanied the Best rookie crown.
