Warriors/Bafana Nov 15 tie yet to be confirmed

Media reports that the on/off proposed tie between the Zimbabwe senor national soccer team and their South African counterparts is now cast in stone remains speculative reports, according to SAFA Media Officer Mahlomora Morake.

Speaking to Beezsports from the SAFA head office in Johannesburg on Monday, Morake admitted that there was talk about the match on the 15th November but nothing concrete has been finalised.

"Yes, my man, I have heard people talking about this match (Zimbabwe v South Africa) outside the offices, but nothing has yet been said to me officially.

"If that match is to take place, which I am not confirming will happen, then it will have to be formally announced," Morake said.

Asked if an announcement will be made any time soon regarding the Warriors/Bafana match and also to clarify the issue of the four nations torunament, Morake confirmed that a press conference will be held tomorrow.

"A press conference will be held tomorrow to clarify the issue of the proposed clash between Bafana Bafana and Ivory Coast in the Nelson Mandela Challenge Trophy as reported in the media.

"And, yes, because the talked about Zim match will be a second match within a few days, if that match will take place, an announcement will be made at the same press conference," the Safa Media Officer added.

There have been conflicting reports in the Zimbabwean media regarding the said Warriors/Bafan match. Reports in the state-owned Zimpapers suggested that initially South Africa intended to play Zimbabwe only during the week of 15 November, and when Safa secured Ivory Coast, they ditched their northern neighbours and instead offered them an Under 23 squad.

The same report suggested that the the Zimbabwe Football Association, having been stung by what they regarded as betrayal from their 'good friends' decided to open discussions with Zambia's Chipolopolo with the view of travelling to Lusaka to engage the Zambians on the 15th November.

Over the weekend, the independent Daily News even went further and confirmed that that match was now back on the table. The same paper quoted a highly placed souce within Safa who confiemd the match.

“The story is Bafana Bafana will now travel to Zimbabwe for the match with Zim on November 15,” said a highly-placed Safa source.

“They (Bafana) are playing Ivory Coast on November 12 in Port Elizabeth for the Nelson Mandela Inauguration.

“Three days later, Pitso Mosimane (Bafana coach) and his boys travel to Zimbabwe for a date with the Warriors.

“That is what is on the table as we speak,” the Daily News said.

Tomorrow's Safa press conference will clarify the matter. The same press conference will not deal with the rumours concerning the four nations tournament, even though Safa have confirmed that there are plans to stage such a tournament.
